State Sen. Alex Padilla

There’s a hearing set for tomorrow in Sacramento to talk about the challenges that will likely come from the permanent shutdown of the San Onofre Nuclear power plant, between LA and San Diego.

Two reactors there have been off-line for more than a year and a half due to unusually worn steam generating tubes in Units 2 and 3.

Its operator, Southern California Edison, announced last month that it won’t bring any of the units back on line.

State Senator Alex Padilla (D-Pacoima) is overseeing that hearing and he joined KCRW’s Steve Chiotakis to talk about decommissioning San Onofre, and the future of nuclear power in California.
