Sam Prekop – The Republic (Thrill Jockey)
Fans of Sam’s work in the band The Sea and Cake or even his first two solo records might be surprised to learn that he has a parallel career as a superior synthesist.
The Republic is his second collection of instrumental electronica that burbles & percolates in an abstract, yet pleasing sort of way.
Emmy the Great – Sep (Bella Union)
London-based singer/songwriter Emma-Lee Moss, aka Emmy the Great, offers up a new collection of four understated pop songs.
They’re full of crafty sonic touches that lend a spacious, spooky sheen to her otherwise hummable tunes.
Wax Stag – II (Old Habits)
Producer Rob Lee doesn’t make much of an effort to blow you away with musical gymnastics on his sophomore record. Instead he relies on distinctive melodies and genuine hooks that resemble the work of other electronic artists such as Royksopp and Bibio (who shares a remix relationship with Wax Stag). A nifty artist worthy of more attention.
