Superfood – “Don’t Say That” (Infectious)

I was working as Music Director at KLA, UCLA’s student-run radio station in the early ’90s, so I have a particular affection for the alternative music of that time. One popular style coming out of the UK was so-called “baggy” music, popularized the likes of Happy Mondays, the Charlatans & EMF.

British newcomers Superfood bring that sound into the 21st century in such a pitch-perfect way it’s unbelievable!

Olive White – “Never Sleep Again” (self-release)

I stumbled upon this local duo at the end of last year, and while they’ve got a full album in the works, this nifty track remains a stellar opening calling card.

It’s got the right balance of pulsing, driving electronics, sexy R&B-influenced vocals, and a polished, slightly menacing production that serves the song well.

Dick Diver – “Melbourne, Florida” (Trouble in Mind)

Once again, Australia proves to be a fertile petri dish for all types of music.

Melbourne’s own Dick Diver (named for a F. Scott Fitzgerald character – get your mind out of the gutter!) have been around since 2008 & a couple of albums, but their new one should take them quite far with its unassuming jangle pop reminiscent of Field Music or their beloved countrymen, the Go-Betweens.
