Shelf Life: Susanne Sundfor, Sarah Bethe Nelson, Cat’s Eyes

Susanne Sundfor – “Ten Love Songs” (Sonnet Sound)

Even if you don’t know the name, you’ve probably heard Norwegian singer/songwriter Susanne Sundfor before.

She has appeared on songs by Royksopp, Maps, Nils Petter Molvaer and M83 (on the soundtrack to the film, “Oblivion“), not to mention her own numerous solo albums.

“Delirious“, from her new album, has been my jam for the past couple of months, perfectly mixing dark, Depeche Mode-like pulsing electronica with ABBA-like soaring pop hooks.

Sarah Bethe Nelson – “Fast Moving Clouds” (Burger)

Playing a more languid brand of the traditional Burger Records sound, SF-based artist Sarah Bethe Nelson fits nicely into the current batch of female singer/songwriters of a somewhat melancholy bent, such as Sharon Van Etten, Angel Olsen & Laura Marling.

But there is a clear awareness of the pleasures of 60’s-flavored garage rock, and the presence of Kelley Stoltz as a collaborator serves as a clue as to her approach.

Cat’s Eyes – “The Duke of Burgundy” OST

Peter Strickland’s recent cult-favorite film, “The Duke of Burgundy“, is a curious, elliptical meditation of erotic obsession (but quite funny at the same time), aided by a recreation of the arcadian vibe of early 70s cinema.

The duo of vocalist Rachel Zaffira and Faris Badwan of The Horrors match that vibe perfectly with their delicate score to the film, well represented by the opening theme.
