I first met Stephen Brunner in 2005 through soul singer Leon Ware. Stephen and his brother had been playing with Leon for a while at that point and I had been busy working on Steve Spacek’s first solo record, “Space Shift“.

Stephen ended up playing us some of his beats … one stuck with Steve and we ended up using it on the album’s opening track, “Hello There“,

If I recall correctly this was Stephen’s first track to make it on a record, so he was psyched!!

And so were we because we knew how good he was and how much better he would become.

We lost touch over the last few years but I would hear about him through other people and I was really happy to hear his collaboration on the Flying Lotus record “Cosmogramma” last year. Then, six months ago, the first Thundercat track surfaced and I was stunned!

“For Love I Come“, which is a George Duke cover, was played on Gilles Peterson show and the internet was buzzing ….

That track picks up where Thundercat and Fly Lo left off when they recorded “mmmmmmm” for “Cosmogramma” — it was easily my favorite song on that album and I am so happy that they went ahead and decided to record a whole album together. We all felt that song was special and now we all know — it is special.

Listening to Thundercat’s debut “The Golden Age of the Apocalypse” on these hot summer days makes me very, very happy, this is a definite favorite of 2011 for me. The album is officially out on August 30 and it is a great record, but also a great sign of what’s more to come from Stephen “Thundercat” Brunner.
