There have been reports of rundown voting machines, confusion over voter registries, and let us never forget the hanging chad debacle in Florida in the 2000 presidential election. Yet, Americans hold dear the notion that the U.S. leads the way when it comes to fair, open and accessible elections. How do we really stack up against other democracies?

Arizona was one of those states that previously had to report voting changes to the federal government, but that changed when the Supreme Court shot down part of the Voting Rights Act in 2013. We’re just now seeing the results of that decision, Nation Magazine’s Ari Berman told Press Play.

“Elections are the most important thing we do in a democracy and we should not be skimping on them,” said Berman.
