From KCRW DJ Chuck P:

San Francisco’s Wooden Shjips (pronounced Shyips) will be releasing their third album, “West”, on Thrill Jockey records in September.

On their new track “Lazy Bones” there is a lot going on. Big rock riffs that chug along and riff into a droning repetition.

Experimental psychedelic rock that reminds me of Parson Sound and Kebnekaise from Sweden circa 1969. In fact, they could fit right into that scene with the recordings they’ve issued so far (self titled and “Dos”, both on Holy Mountain records). There are also a couple of compilation discs that pull together singles and other stray tracks.

Prolific for a band that’s been releasing music since 2007. Live, their music is loud and packs an even greater punch. See them when they play in LA on August 19 at the Echo.

Editor’s Note: “West” marks the first time the band has recorded in a proper studio, as well as the first time with an engineer at the helm. It was recorded and mixed in six days in San Francisco and is supposed to take you on a journey. The overriding theme, as evidenced by the title, is “the American West, and all of the mythology, romanticism, and idealism that it embodies.”
