Summer Road Trip: Cycling the ‘Fruit Loop’

Written by

In our final KCRW Summer Road Trip we trade motors for muscles. Our guest, Jennifer Klausner, is the director of the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition.

She recommends a favorite cycling trip known as the “Fruit Loop.” It takes experienced riders (emphasis on experienced) from Pacific Coast Highway way up into the Santa Monica Mountains, where the reward for lots of pedaling and sweating are magnificent views and a great workout. And maybe even some fresh fruit.

Here’s the route:

Pacific Coast Highway to Malibu Canyon Rd.

Take the beautiful but challenging climb up Malibu Canyon to Malibu Creek State Park (this is a great place to stop)

At Mulholland Highway where Malibu Canyon Road turns in Las Virgenes Road there’s a temporary fruit stand (thus the Fruit Loop name)

Hang a right on Old Topanga from Mulholland which takes you into the quirky Topanga Village (another great place to stop)

Drop down Topanga Canyon Road all the way back to PCH
