Here's a literary historical enigma: Did Stephen Crane attempt to write a gay companion piece to his Maggie: A Girl of the Streets? Literary rumor says he tried. At any rate, now Edmund White has written it for him. It's Hotel de Dream: A New York Novel(Ecco) and the "underground" history of classic American fiction.
