A Week Ahead: Today’s Top Tune 6.12 – 6.16.17

This week, Today’s Top Tune presents a new batch of songs including new work from Girlpool, who come to the Glass House in Pomona later this month. We’re digging Washed Out‘s new track “Get Lost.” Courtney Barnett reworks one of the first songs she ever wrote and finally records it. Argentine-born and NY-based Tei Shi finally shares her debut album, and Joey Bada$$ delivers a powerful message.

The sophomore album by Girlpool finds the band adding a drummer. The duo, comprised of singers/guitarists Harmony Tividad and Cleo Tucker, felt that percussion would help them explore a new dimension in their musical dynamic. “Sleepless” showcases their spare and simple sound.

A new single is a great way for an artist to get back on the road, and for Ernest Greene aka Washed Out — who hasn’t headlined shows in a couple of years– “Get Lost” is an energetic return. The new track also lends its name to his Southeastern US tour in July.

A long time ago, Courtney Barnett would play “How To Boil An Egg” at open mics in her native Australia before making it big. Yet it never got recorded. While she was hunkered down recording demos for her next album, Barnett decided to experiment with one of the first songs she ever wrote by updating it for inclusion on a Split Singles Club release.

Thursday, June 15, Tei Shi How Far from Crawl Space

Tei Shi is a fast-rising star, and her debut album documents her evolution as she comes into her own. “How Far” is a personal song, as she explores what to do when a relationship falls apart.

Brooklyn rapper, actor and savvy businessman Joey Bada$$ doesn’t speak out on social and political issues often, but “Temptation” is a beautiful song with a powerful message.
