CANT: Artist You Should Know

Written by

From our NYC correspondent DJ Jason Eldredge:

Chris Taylor’s producing skills became readily apparent in 2004 when he joined the folk rock band, Grizzly Bear. His work on their albums “Yellow House” and “Veckatimist” (plus, the latest The Morning Benders album, “Big Echo“) truly shined and announced an artist who was reinventing modern-day standard forms of musical soundscapes in new w

When listening to any record produced by Taylor, one is usually transported to another realm by some seriously wistful overtones and seemingly unearthly sounds. Thankfully those qualities haven’t changed on the artist’s debut solo album, released this week on his own Terrible Records label under the moniker of CANT.

A burst of beats explodes into the leadoff track entitled, “Too Late, Too Far“, which is one of the many standouts from the new release, provocatively entitled “Dreams Come True.”

Taylor’s vocals on the collection are often ethereal, at times commanding, and always beautiful. Brief Radiohead-esque piano interludes or sketches also pepper the release, which you’ll wish could go on forever. Other gems include the title track, “Dreams Come True” and a funky, space-age sounding smooth jam called, “The Edge“.

Overall, there isn’t a bad song on the release and the record solidifies Chris Taylor as an independent entity under the guise of a very talented multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, producer, and artist. Highly recommended. (oh, and see the live show when they come through LA at the Troubadour on October 8. Full tour dates below!)
