Mia Doi Todd: Local Artist We Love

From Morning Becomes Eclectic producer Ariana Morgenstern:

Mia Doi Todd’s world is filled with creative life force.

She’s an accomplished musician, a butoh dancer and has an uncanny ability when it comes to art. She makes all kinds of things, from her own clothes to beautiful drawings that grace the covers of her records.

Her 9th release “Cosmic Ocean Ship” is one of her best as she concentrates her efforts into a song cycle that was inspired by her recent travels and spiritual journey.

Her focus is on sunny spots around the globe, whether strolling through pastoral imagery, painting a picture of Cuba, paying tribute to her hometown of Los Angeles or reveling in reworked classics like Violetta Parra’s “Gracias A La Vida” or Baden Powell and Vincicius de Moraes’ magical “Canto de Iemanjá”.

All of the songs on “Cosmic Ocean Ship” are treated to an impeccable production with intimate pristine vocals. She’s gathered impressive musicians to lend delicate beds beneath her voice, as she contemplates life’s bounty. The album is out now.

Mia is also featured in the latest Red Hot + Rio 2 collection — a tribute to the late 60’s Tropicália movement that raises funds for HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention. It’s slated for release in late June and her contributions are simply stunning.

Even better, she is playing the Echo tonight if you want to check out the live show.

There is also an excellent opportunity to see her live this summer – she’ll be performing as part of KCRW’s World Music Festival at the Hollywood Bowl on July 24. It’s a celebration of Global Soul and a 40th anniversary tribute to Marvin Gaye’s classic record, “What’s Going On” , led by Stevie Wonder and Ricky Minor. Other performers include Janelle Monáe, Grace Potter, Rocky Dawuni, Sharon Jones and Ceci Bastida. Find out more here and buy tickets here.
