We seem to be living in a Golden Age. Musicians and producers have access to all sorts of technology that allows them to make music on their own time and to share it with anyone across the globe with an internet connection. Artists can offer up a track or two online, and within a couple of years they can become a household name (at least within the houses of progressive music fans). TOTEM is one great example: since 2013 and the release of a couple of EPs, the NYC-via-Atlanta singer/songwriter has staked his claim as a premiere purveyor of soulful indie-pop, which has received much laudatory electronic ink from numerous online sites. We’re excited to be the latest destination for his work, premiering his new spacious jam, “Addicted.”
The song captures the moment with skittering percussion, electronic throbs and carefully-built crescendos, led by TOTEM’s emotional delivery of his lovelorn lyrics. He continues his march towards universal recognition with appearances at this year’s SXSW, so it seems a sure bet that 2016 will be a watershed year for this young artist.
