KCRW Broadcast 73

Fanatics!

This could very well be a great mistake but I am doing it anyway. A long time ago, one of the first shows Engineer X and I did when we got to Tha K was a concept show on Post Punk. I thought it was one of the best ones we ever did. I am thinking that there might be some of you Fanatics who never heard it and perhaps some of you that might enjoy hearing it again. So, that's what we're going to do. This is not a repeat of the previous broadcast in that we will be live, only the music will be the same. A repeat? Awww come on! I know. I just thought this one was a special show and I thought that the weather was perfect for it and so, late last night, that's the decision I made.

Before you furrow your brow, behold the jams on our play list! Yes, yes, ya'll, it's the top shelf gear, for sure. Also, we are live, you gotta tune in and do it in real time with me, X and The Double B.

I am writing to you from the Miami Airport. I have been working on a project that I think you Fanatics will dig. More details when I am at liberty to disclose.

I will have new Early Man in a couple of days from now. I will get that on the air when I get back from Europe in a couple of weeks. Looking forward to hearing that one. Also, some cool Sun Ra re-issues will be coming in as well as some great stuff that Engineer X has turned me onto recently as well as that a sampling of that cool remastered Kraftwerk box set, the German language version.

I will be heading to Europe the day after our show for some festival dates. I will be running offstage in England next Sunday and heading right for Heathrow to make it to DC for the Evens Fort Reno show the next day. There won't be much sleep in that time but there is no way I am missing the Evens at Fort Reno, that's going to be a great one, for sure.

I am putting in last year's show notes at the bottom as they have some useful information. Next week, a great concept show that Engineer X and I started work on last summer! Good things take time. Ok, I have to get on a plane, the story of my life. Dig the show live with me and the other two. Get ready to go back in time and STAY FANATIC!!!

Finally, we are getting this broadcast out to you all! I have been working on this one for weeks. In fact, I was changing things all the way until last night. Many weeks ago, whilst reading Simon Reynolds' very good book on Post Punk, Rip It Up And Start Again, I thought I would do a show based around bands that were in the book and some that weren't. Besides the topic matter being interesting, Reynolds is a good writer and puts all this music in context. This is a very worthwhile read and the music holds up very well all these years later.

There are two versions of Rip It Up And Start Again.

I have them both. I don't know why, but the writing is different in some parts of the US version, perhaps an attempt to “Americanize” it or something. Also, the US edition doesn't seem to have as much content as the UK version. If I were you, I would get the UK version, it's a little more expensive but worth it. However, you would be well served by the US edition.

Tonight's broadcast concentrates mainly on the UK Post Punk scene with a little of the US version thrown in. The book covers scenes happening in other places.

I think tonight is one of our best ever broadcasts so I hope you enjoy it. I think Post Punk was one of the most impactful eras of music. Talk about influencing what came afterwards! Post Punk music certainly left its mark. There is no way that I could put in all the bands that would fall into this genre so obviously some have been left out. Perhaps for another show, you never know. We have a long way to go!

I wrote a short letter to Simon Reynolds, telling him of our show tonight. I wonder if he'll check it out?

It's great to be back live on the radio again. It's been two weeks. I was onstage at Coachella last Saturday and was unable to get back to the station.
