Morning Becomes Eclectic playlist: August 13, 2024

If you lived through the great Drive OST takeover of 2011, you probably didn’t need to Shazam Kavinsky’s “Nightcall” when he joined his fellow Frenchmen Phoenix to perform the track during the Paris Olympic closing ceremony… But a lot of other people did! So many that it broke the record for most Shazamed song in a single day.

So (obviously) “Nightcall” is on deck for ya when you cue up this MBE. Also, Ibibio Sound Machine’s richly textured groover “Black Notes,” a brand new soul-stirrer from Kelly Finnigan (Monophonics), and a dip back into Justice’s Hyperdrama.

The Black Notes EP follows on the heels of 2024’s acclaimed Pull the Rope and follows that album in revealing even more facets of Ibibio Sound Machine’s perpetual groove. "Moments of joy and feeling grateful for the sun on your face."

from BROCKHAMPTON. Joba says: "When I listen to ‘People Need People’ it’s as if I’m living out a classic movie from the golden age of Hollywood cinema. The music has a transportive quality, an escape rooted in acceptance and romance. It’s the soundtrack for the moment you leave a town behind with the sunset roaring in the rearview. It’s the memories on the forefront of your mind, the ones you’ll keep forever."
