Nov 10, 2022

Ready for the long weekend ahead? It’s off with a bang around these parts thanks to our world premiere of the latest single from London’s Kit Sebastian. “Hayat” finds the duo delving into their Turkish and Azerbaijan influences to craft a sparkling, discodelic gem. It’ll hit the streamers soon, but it’s all yours right here, right now!

Today’s program isn’t all frivolity and premieres, however. School is IN SESSION as our dear friend, acclaimed film critic, and host of KCRW’s The Treatment, Elvis Mitchell stops by to give us the scoop on his directorial debut. The film, “Is That Black Enough For You?!,” drops on Netflix Friday, Nov. 11. A documentary examining the power of African American films released during the seismically impactful late 1960s and 1970s, “Is That Black Enough For You?!” is already garnering rave reviews, standing-room-only screenings, and plenty of awards buzz.

Mitchell takes us on a journey through his creative process via his hand-picked song selections. Each song is a part of a film soundtrack, and he expertly explains the significance of both the film and the song’s composition — especially important when one considers the lack of Black music phenomenology in mainstream media.

But it’s not all academia, expect a major “Wow” factor from this film. “I want you to watch the movie and go “wait what!?” every five minutes,” says Mitchell.

The fates have aligned to determine that “Is that Black Enough For You?!” should be released alongside “Black Panther” sequel, “Wakanda Forever.” Expect Black excellence to permeate this weekend, and well beyond. Pro-tip: If you were one of the lucky few who made it to kcrw.com/events in time to snag an RSVP to our upcoming screening of the film, definitely don’t sleep on the Q&A following the show.
