Marcus Lambkin (Shit Robot) has been a staple of James Murphy's DFA label for nearly two decades(!). He's often credited as the guy who helped guide Murphy toward disco and house. His small-yet-influential Plant Bar (opened with fellow Irish ex-pat Dominique Keegan) in the East Village was the unofficial DFA hangout in the early 2000s.
The latest entry to Shit Robot’s prolific catalog of originals and remixes is "No Cigar,” a cool-as-ice cut made with Joe Goddard and Al Doyle at their RAE Studios in London. Ahead of the single’s July 25 release date, Shit Robot hits us with a guest mix to really get your neurons firing. But don’t take our word for it, here’s a bit of background mix directly from the source:
“This mix comes from my sets warming up for LCD Soundsystem. When on tour I might do four to eight shows in a run. I like to try to make each show different and not play the same set every night. Sometimes I play to the crowd, sometimes I play for myself, but oftentimes the band will have the audio piped into the dressing rooms. This set comes from specifically playing to them. I’ve played a few different versions of this set, but anytime I played a synth/coldwave set I always got a great response from the band so I wanted to record something to remember before I moved on.
It’s not specifically coldwave or synthwave or whatever-wave so I just tongue-in-cheekily titled the mix Robot Wave.”
Thomas Dolby drops original mixes just for KCRW. Every Friday in December.
