CIA Director George Tenet Testifies before 9-11 Commission

Hosted by
CIA Director George Tenet made a reluctant concession to the 9-11 Commission today, saying -we made mistakes.- He admitted that failure to penetrate al Qaeda-s plot to attack the United States left the country, -in effect unprotected,- and admitted that the victims deserved better. Tenet said it-ll take five years to develop the intelligence service America needs, and although the Commissioners had mostly kind words for Tenet himself today, they described their staff report as an indictment of the intelligence establishment. As the Commission looks to the future, what threats will the nation face-and what will it take to meet them? Warren Olney speaks with experts in national security, religious extremism, foreign policy, and terrorism, including former Bush advisors and the official credited with creating the Justice Department's Terrorism Unit.
  • Making News: Bush-Sharon Press Conference
President Bush met with Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon today and endorsed Israel-s withdrawal from Gaza and some Jewish settlements in the West Bank. But says Steven Weisman of the New York Times, the President's apparent shift in Middle East foreign policy, is angering the Palestinian community, despite his clear support for a Palestinian state.
  • Reporter-s Notebook: Voters Go to Polls in South Africa-s Third Democratic Election
"It is often said that the first election after freedom is the last one, because most countries degenerate into dictatorships. We are disproving that.- So spoke Desmond Tutu, head of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission that helped heal South Africa's wounds of a brutal past. As voters head to the polls in the decade's third election with all races participating, some political leaders worry that the thrill may be wearing off. CNN's Charlayne Hunter-Gault spiritedly disagrees.
