Immigration Reform Rides Again

The Freedom Rides of the 1960-s played a big part in generating support for America-s civil rights movement. For the past week, the Immigrant Workers- Freedom Rides have been trying to do the same on behalf of immigration reform. Last week, 18 buses took off from the West Coast, Midwest, Deep South and New England, with arrival scheduled in Washington this coming Thursday. Their goal is to legalize millions of undocumented workers. Though some Democrats and some Republicans back the proposal, in the aftermath of September 11, such legislation is hotly controversial. Would it end the atrocities of human smuggling? We hear from a freedom rider, a farm labor contractor, Congressmen and Senators from across the country and both sides of the aisle. Making News: Pursuit at US-Mexico Border Kills 4 Illegal Immigrants Yesterday, 20 miles north of California-s border with Mexico, the Border Patrol chased an SUV full of suspected illegal immigrants for some 10 miles. Though agents say they backed off when the driver failed to slow down, the SUV rolled over and four people were killed. The driver will be charged with alien smuggling. Joel Millman, who covers the US-Mexico border for the Wall Street Journal, says these incidents are becoming more frequent.
