The North American Free Trade Agreement was intended to phase out most trade restrictions between the United States, Canada, and Mexico, and usher in a period of prosperity. But on its 10th anniversary, critics and supporters are still at odds over whether the treaty that affects some 800 million people has worked. Some call NAFTA a failure in economic and environmental terms, and say the agreement needs to be re-negotiated. Others, including Mexico-s former president, say it has led to more jobs and better relations with the US.
