The Radically Changing Reality of Corporate America

Hosted by Warren Olney Apr. 14, 2006 National
Popular along Madison Avenue these days is the popular phrase "it's not your grandfather's (fill in the blank) anymore." That notion definitely applies corporate life in America. Though our grandfathers may have worked a lifetime for a company and been taken care of through retirement, those days are over. Downsizing and foreign outsourcing of labor, globalization, distrust of corporate executives and unions' loss of prestige and power have all contributed to this evolution. General Motors, once considered the paradigm of corporate security, is fighting for its life. Guest host Diana Nyad explores the collapse of corporate America as we knew it through the 20th century. Making News: Delta and Pilots Union Reach Agreement, Avert StrikeWith a looming pilots strike, travelers booked on Delta Airlines over the busy Easter weekend were prepared for major hassles. But Delta and its pilots' union today reached a tentative agreement and the 1,722 flights Delta operates daily will continue as scheduled. Evan Perez, who covers the airline industry for the Wall Street Journal, says both sides agreed that cutbacks were crucial to the airline's survival.Reporter's Notebook: Federal Prosecutors Tighten Noose around Barry BondsSuper-slugger Barry Bonds is being booed in most stadiums other than his own, suspected of using steroids and other performance enhancing drugs. The San Francisco Giant is aching with injuries and is under investigation for drug use. Now, the federal government is looking into perjury charges against him, relating to his grand jury testimony in 2003. Ray Ratto is a sports columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle and ESPN.com.
Guest host Diana Nyad, 2002 inductee into the International Swimming Hall of Fame, is a business sports columnist for Marketplace, senior sports correspondent for Fox News, and has hosted her own show on CNBC. She's also the author of three books.
