Cable TV, Broadband and Media Monopolies

California's Public Utilities Commission says it has the authority to block a $45 billion telecom merger — at least in the Golden State. Why should customers in Southern California care which company has a monopoly over cable TV? Would it weaken their signals if the PUC killed the merger here but federal regulators approved it for the rest of the country?

Also, LA Unified has approved two middle schools for girls only. Is it a step toward closing the gender gap in science and tech?
