Another increase today: Gas tax

California’s gas tax increased by 5.6 cents a gallon, which is part of an incremental increase of the tax that voters approved a few years back. It doesn’t sound like much, but when you add the 12 cents a gallon from November 2017, and some vehicle fee increases, it adds up for drivers.

The state is in dire need of additional funds to fix roads and bridges. The American Society of Civil Engineers gave California’s roads a “D” grade, putting it amongst the worst in the country.

Some of the money from the gas tax, split between state and local governments, will help fix California’s highly trafficked thoroughfares, while some will go to public transportation and other projects.
