RADIO BROADCAST #871

12-12–25

Fanatic! I hope you had a great week. I had a chance to listen to the live Boris album Pink Days a couple of nights ago. So far, there was a very limited pressing of it on their website that sold out immediately, and then a larger pressing the band has been selling on tour. I have no idea as to the status of those. I believe the band has completed their North American dates and have headed back to Japan. Unfortunately, for now at least, copies online are expensive. It’s too bad. It sounds so good. I hope Boris will have mercy on people who do not want to pay exorbitant prices and press up some more. I was lucky, my good pal and sonic ally, Fanatic Denise snagged me one at the merch table when she saw them play recently. She’s done this multiple times over the years as I can never seem to find myself in the same city as Boris. Anyway, I hope you get a chance to check it out sometime.

You have a life and things to do, so you might not know this: David Bowie’s amazing album Heroes has been bootlegged and pressed in different colored vinyl. There are a lot of variants. If you want a visual, here are a few.

A few years ago, these were everywhere. I found eight different variants, including a picture disc. They sound a lot better than records like these usually do. Quite often bootlegs of official albums like these, (and there are plenty of them) use a digital source, like a CD. You can hear it very quickly on the vinyl. There’s a shallowness that’s unmistakable. I find the bootlegs more interesting than the official releases. When I found them, they were really cheap. Last night, I listened to one of them and was surprised at how good it sounded. It’s such a great record. My personal favorite album of David Bowie’s is Scary Monsters. All that Robert Fripp guitar, so high up in the mix. It’s a purposefully in your face record. That being said, I think Heroes is Bowie’s best, as far as composition, execution and the sounds. A serious meeting of the minds on that one: David Bowie, Tony Visconti, and Brian Eno. Wow!

I watched this documentary about David Bowie again last night. Really cool.

A really great record you should be aware of. The Real Janelle by Bratmobile has been out of print for a long time. It’s just been reissued with The Real Janelle tracks on the A side and Bratmobile’s Peel sessions on the B. It sounds great.

For vinyl, I saw a lot of them on Discogs. I didn’t see the vinyl listed at the Kill Rock Stars site.

This box sure looks good to me!

There’s a new Heather The Jerk 7” called the Very Motorcycle EP. The vinyl is gone on Bandcamp.

You can still find some copies on Discogs.

We’ll start tracks from it soon.

We have a track from the cool band Adele Dazeem tonight.

Fanatic, also take note that this is KCRW’s season of giving. Please, if you’re not yet a member, I encourage you to join at KCRW.com/give.

Hopefully, Fanatic, we’ve gathered what you will hopefully find to be a fantastic batch of tunes to spend some time with. Have a great night of listening and STAY FANATIC!!!
