Fanatic! I hope you had a great week and got some music listened to. For the last few days, I’ve been not sleeping and moving around the country via airplane. There’s nothing like a big weather system in Dallas to throw your travel plans into chaos.
You might remember last year, when I appeared to have caused some confusion when I told you Ian MacKaye and I had worked on a record together at Inner Ear Studios in Arlington, VA. The record in question has just been released. We are extremely stoked that it’s finally available. Here’s some information:
U.K. Subs - Demo Kicks
01. Brand New Age (Harper / Garratt)
02. Kicks (Harper / Garratt)
03. Emotional Blackmail Part 1 (Harper / Garratt)
04. Same Thing (Slack / Harper) that is finally available.
Vocals: Charlie Harper Guitar: Nicky Garratt Bass: Paul Slack Drums: Pete Davies
Recorded at Alvic Sound Studio August 21 1979
Engineer: Steve Smith
Mixed by Ian MacKaye and Henry Rollins for RAM Prod.
Session consultant: Eddie Janney / FOE
Inner Ear Studios Arlington, Virginia
Engineer: Don Zientara
Tape transferred and mastered by Pete Lyman Infrasonic Sound Nashville, Tennessee
Tracks 1–3 previously unreleased
On June 16, 2025, I saw a U.K. Subs multi-track demo tape for sale on eBay, of all places. I got it and sent a photo of the front cover of the tape box, which informs the back cover of this 12” to Subs drummer Pete Davies, to see what he might remember. He said it looked legit. I took the tape to Infrasonic Sound, a great studio in Nashville and asked engineer Pete Lyman if he could transfer the tape. Days later, he sent Ian MacKaye and I a rough mix of the session. I was stoked to hear that three of the four tracks were unreleased. I contacted Ian and suggested we take the tracks to Don Zientara’s Inner Ear Studios in Arlington, VA (where we made our first records decades ago) to mix them. On September 30 there we were with Don. Due to the tracks being so well recorded, and the band playing so incredibly, our first mix began to take shape very quickly. Part way into the session, Eddie Janney (Untouchables, Faith, Rites Of Spring, One Last Wish, Happy Go Licky, Skewbald) arrived to sit in and we had another Subs fan in attendance. Together, we finished mixing the last two tracks. We brought the mixes to Pete Lyman for mastering. I wrote Subs vocalist Charlie Harper and asked his permission to unleash the tracks and he said go ahead. So, here we are with three unreleased U.K. Subs tunes and a new mix of Same Thing. Studio Kicks, indeed! These songs are finally where they should be—with you.

The record is really good and I hope you get a chance to check it out. We have another record being pressed right now. We will be able to announce in late June and the record will be released in the third week of August. Something to look forward to.
Today, is Sun Ra’s birthday, so we have included two tracks of his.
Thanks to Fanatic Jim, I got the heads up that there’s a new record by Cosey Mueller called Embodiment Of Denial. A little less than 90 USD including postage to the USA. As much as it pains me, I think I’ll just be getting the download. We will start tracks soon. In any case, thank you, Fanatic Jim.

Tonight, we have a solid group of tunes that will hopefully get your weekend off to a great start. You’ll notice we have a U.K. Subs track from their fourth album Diminished Responsibility. This is the original cover artwork. Still in existence, over 40 years later.

Fanatic, did you know that this show is re-broadcast on Monday nights on KCRW at 10 PM Pacific Standard Time? Well, now you do!
We hope you enjoy tonight’s show. Have a great weekend and STAY FANATIC!!!
