Fanatic! I do believe we are emerging from the fridgid jaws of winter and soon, spring will be upon us. I am going to cram the last of my cold weather listening into a few more days and then move onto other stuff. I had a good winter of listening. I actually set up a cold weather listening schedule in an effort to keep the tunes happening as much as I could. It was a lot of German music, Can, Kraftwerk, Conrad Schnitzler, Kluster, Cluster, etc. It was great. Spring and fall, those are very inspiring times of the year for me. I look forward to this one.

Fanatic, thank you so much for all the letters you sent in about the show we did with John Dywer and last week’s salute to the passing of Bob ‘Bob 2’ Casale of Devo. Thank you for taking the time out to listen in.

Tonight’s show is our humble effort to acknowledge the changing of the seasons as we slowly ramp up for the battering of summer.

I saw Pontiak play a couple of weeks ago. I was already a fan but after seeing how damn good they were live, I only like them more. Check out tonight’s track of theirs and see what you think. If you like what you hear, Sea Voids is a great album to start in with.

We thank Engineer X for taking the new Choubi! Choubi! Vol. 2 LP set and transferring it to digital, making it easier to bring to your ears. I recommend both volumes. Great music.

In our second hour, we strike again with more great tunes, starting with a classic Thin Lizzy track, the BBC version, which is quite good.

If you feel compelled, there is some interesting reading you can do about the Bowie track we are featuring tonight, Bewley Brothers. It’s one of my favorites. If you have never checked out his Hunky Dory album, it’s a great one.

David Bowie, London Mail 6/29/08: “The only pipe I have ever smoked was a cheap Bewlay. It was a common item in the late ‘60s and for this song I used Bewlay as a cognomen - in place of my own. This wasn’t just a song about brotherhood so I didn’t want to misrepresent it by using my true name. Having said that, I wouldn’t know how to interpret the lyric of this song other than suggesting that there are layers of ghosts within it. It’s a palimpsest, then.

The circumstances of the recording barely exist in my memory. It was late, I know that. I was on my own with my producer Ken Scott; the other musicians having gone for the night. Unlike the rest of the Hunky Dory album, which I had written before the studio had been booked, this song was an unwritten piece that I felt had to be recorded instantaneously. I had a whole wad of words that I had been writing all day. I had felt distanced and unsteady all evening, something settling in my mind. It’s possible that I may have smoked something in my Bewlay pipe. I distinctly remember a sense of emotional invasion. I do believe that we finished the whole thing on that one night. It’s likely that I ended up drinking at the Sombrero in Kensington High Street or possibly Wardour Street’s crumbling La Chasse. Cool.”
