Mar 6, 2024

“The Experiment is prolific, a vault of stories,” states the manifesto posted on the website for LA-via-Baltimore sibling duo, The South Hill Experiment. The S.H.E. asks you to remember what you love about music. Try it, you never know. The most exciting time to make music is always right now.”

They bring that ethos to KCRW’s Annenberg Performance Studio for a beautifully dissonant set of jazz-folk dynamics to handily carry us well past the “hump” in hump day. Decked out as “old school middle school art teachers” (with a dash of mad scientist for good measure), the core members Baird Acheson (guitar), Gabe “Goldwash” Acheson (keys), and their support team — Tim McNalley (bass), Mano Ruiz (drums), and Ryan Raines (drums) — run through the project’s expansive catalog. Think Crosby, Stills, Nash (or some combo there of) layered over heavy rhythms and effects galore. Scrub to 02:04:55 via the player button to your left to get right to the goods and prepare to swoon for KCRW faves like “Chameleons” and “DREAMS!” alongside the latest like “BONITA” from their freshly released EP South Hill & Friends. Plus, in conversation with Novena Carmel they hint at some big pop collabs in the future… Maybe even one with an artist that “you could call, probably.”
