    Today’s magnitude 4.2 earthquake in the San Fernando Valley wasn’t quite “the big one” that many Angelenos have been bracing for. But when that does happen, the results could be catastrophic.

    Today’s magnitude 4.2 earthquake in the San Fernando Valley wasn’t quite“the big one” that many Angelenos have been bracing for. But when that does happen, the results could be catastrophic.

    A magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck Christchurch, New Zealand in 2011, killing 185 people and causing $26 billion in damage.

    There are many similarities between New Zealand and Southern California.

    LA Times reporter Ron Lin traveled to Christchurch last year to find out what Californians can learn from across the Pacific.
