Julie Taymor Stages ‘A Midsummer Night's Dream’ for the Screen

Julie Taymor has directed theater, opera and film. She’s perhaps best known for the stage version of The Lion King, which she created in 1997 and is still going strong on Broadway, but Taymor is also very committed to Shakespeare. She directed the 1997 cinematic adaptation of Shakespeare's Titus Andronicus, starring Anthony Hopkins in the title role. She also made a movie version of The Tempest. And now, on the anniversary of the Bard’s death four hundred years ago, Taymor has brought a fantastical, movement and music-filled stage version of A Midsummer Night's Dream to the screen. But rather than sending the film to the cineplex, she’s created a roadshow of sorts. A Midsummer Night's Dream will screen one-night only at The Crest in West Los Angeles on Sunday, May 22nd.
