It’s a very international year for the Academy Awards. ‘Roma’ and ‘The Favourite’ led the way with 10 Oscar nominations each, including best picture and best director. Alfonso Cuaron’s ‘Roma’ broke historic ground for Netflix–the black-and-white, foreign-language film marks the first time the streamer has ever had a movie in the best picture race.

Joining Cuaron and and ‘The Favourite’s’ Yorgos Lanthimos in the best director race are Polish director Pawel Pawlikowski for ‘Cold War,’–another foreign language, black-and-white film, Adam McKay for ‘Vice,’ and Spike Lee with his first best director nomination for ‘BlacKkKlansman.’ That means no directing nomination for Bradley Cooper, though his film ‘A Star is Born’ was nominated for Best Picture and Lady Gaga is on the list for best actress.

‘Black Panther’ landed Marvel its first-ever best picture nomination, and made history with Hannah Beachler’s–she’s the first African American nominated to for production design. No nomination for Ryan Coogler though, in either directing or screenplay. On another international note–three of the five best cinematography nominees are also for foreign films–‘Cold War,’ ‘Roma’ and ‘Never Look Away.’
