Ride formed in 1988 and is the progenitor of shoegaze music. One year later, T

he Cure released one of their most influential and beloved albums, the introspective and beautifully gloomy “

Disintegration.

”

The latter had a big influence on the Oxford quintet and the feeling was mutual – The Curesinger Robert Smith was an outspoken fan of Ride as they gained stride in the ’90s, even going so far as saying in rock doc “Beautiful Noise” that “Vapour Trail” had one of the best first 15 seconds of any pop song.

Ride split in 1996 but reunited for live shows in April this year. Longtime fans were beside themselves at the idea of seeing the band again and they returned as if they never missed a beat; if you need proof… check out Ride’s first live radio performance in 20 years, which bowed on Morning Becomes Eclecticof course!

Six months later, the Ride reformation train is still rolling and finally their mutual admiration with Robert Smith is bearing fruit.

When the group decided to seek out some new remixes, Smith was one of the first people they asked. He accepted the challenge, giving us the “Trail Mix” of “Vapour Trail.”

Jason Bentley scored the U.S. premiere of the song on MBE this morning.

Find Ride’s full session for KCRW in the archives and see them live when they return to L.A. for a show at the Wiltern on Thursday, November 12.
