When last we corresponded, Mexico was celebrating a big upset victory over Germany in the World Cup, and Los Angeles was in the middle of a triple digit heat wave. This week France is basking in their World Cup title, and LA has returned to familiar summer temps of mid-80s – for the moment. Speaking of returns, this weekend’s list of music to check out includes a big comeback. So let’s get to the music!

Chaka Khan – Like Sugar

Yes, you read that correctly. The Chaka Khan. The queen of 70s is back! “Like Sugar” is her first new song in over a decade. It’s produced by veteran producer Switch, who you may remember as an original member of Major Lazer. This is the lead single from a newly-announced album, which will also be on Switch’s label, Diary Records. “Like Sugar” has that infectious funk groove, perfect for the summertime.

The Internet – Hive Mind

We go from a veteran of the funk to relative newcomers. The Internet’s latest record dropped today, and I’ve been in high anticipation of this project since the first single, “Roll (Burbank Funk).” This LA collective has always put out solid material fusing funk, 90s R&B, Prince-like pop with splashes of Isley Brothers’ guitar, all the while maintaining a sense of uniqueness. What more can you ask for? Enjoy the visuals for that initial track, “Roll (Burbank Funk),” as well as the sounds of their latest single, “La Di Da.”

Cornelia Murr – Lake Tear of the Clouds

This is the debut album from LA-based singer/songwriter Cornelia Murr. Though born in London, Murr has lived in various locations all over the US. This collection of songs reflects some of the influences gained over those years, most notably time spent living in the rural corners of the country. Lake Tear of the Clouds is a sonic journey of cosmic soul, psych-folk and lo-fi country with touches of French pop. I have been quite charmed with this record and think you will too. Check out the video for “Man On My Mind,” which was produced by Jim James, a guest on Morning Becomes Eclectic just yesterday – you can hear that session here.
