Tomatoes and traffic: Council mulls vegetable gardens

The L.A. City Council will consider a proposal today to allow residents to plant vegetable gardens on strips of city-owned land between streets and sidewalks. The gardens would be allowed as long as they don’t keep people from walking on sidewalks. The plants cannot be poisonous, invasive, or controlled substances, like marijuana…L.A. City Councilman Jose Huizar says his extramarital affair with a former staffer who’s now accusing of him sexual harassment was a “huge mistake.” Huizar, who kicked off his March 2015 reelection campaign last night, says he had an “occasional and consensual” relationship with Godoy – but he called her allegations of harassment false. In her lawsuit, Godoy accused Huizar of offering to trade political favors for sex…L.A. County Supervisors have voted to move ahead with plans for 1,600 bed women’s jail in Lancaster. The new jail is expected to cost $110 million. It will be built on the site of a federal immigration detention center that’s no longer used. The Sheriff’s Department says the county’s main women’s jail in Lynwood is at 160 percent of capacity, which has meant widespread early releases…UCLA will appeal a federal judge’s ruling that effectively locks the university out of its baseball field. Jackie Robinson Stadium sits on Veterans Administration land in West L.A., where Bruin baseball has been played for decades. The judge says the VA is violating federal law by not using the land to provide health care for vets. If the appeal fails, the university

may have to vacate the stadium after the 2014 season…And finally, road kill anyone? A web camera focused on California condors living in the wild went live this week on the Big Sur coast. The camera was installed by the Oakland Zoo and the Ventana Wilderness Society. Visitors are warned that the footage includes images of North America’s largest and rarest birds feeding on dead animals.
