The Dutch play Spain on Sunday in the World Cup final on Sunday. Evan and I thought it would be fun to have the two cuisines square off. Here are some dishes that we think best exemplify the two cuisines…

Netherlands

The Dutch are known less for high cuisine and more for homey satisfying treats.

Kroketten (fried meat coated in breadcrumbs)

Frikandel (a minced meat hot dog)

Stroopwafels (thin waffle cookies with a caramel-like filling)

Cow cheeses like Edam and Gouda

Herring

Salty Black Licorice

Spain

The lusty quality of Spanish Cuisine is satisfying and filled with flavor

Charcuterie spiced with pimenton

Paella

Gazpacho

Stuffed Piquillo Peppers

Tortilla Española

Jamon Serrano
