PIE-A-DAY #40

This recipe comes to us from Hank Shaw, author of Hunt, Gather, Cook: Finding the Forgotten Feast and curator his blog: Hunter Angler Gardener Cook.

As a deer hunter, I am always on the lookout for new venison recipes. That usually means adapting recipes for beef or lamb for wild game, and this meat pie is a great example of that. I read a fantastic article in Saveur about Sicilian food — one of my all-time favorite cuisines — and I saw that they make little meat pies for Easter with lamb and oregano. I immediately thought this would be a perfect thing to do with ground venison. Besides, who doesn’t like meat pies?

These are not too tricky to make, and they hold together well for eating later. They’d be perfect as a brown-bag lunch, on a picnic… or a deer hunt.
