Last month in Pacoima, the Junior League of Los Angeles teamed up with MEND (Meet Each Need with Dignity), the largest poverty-relief organization in the San Fernando Valley, for an event called Kids in the Kitchen. Designed to fight childhood obesity, the event’s focus was to promote healthy eating and exercise through new foods, gardening, and a hip-hop dance class for the kids as well as a cooking demo and healthy lifestyle course for the parents. Parents from MEND attended a cooking demo with Safoa Abboa-Offei of Safoa’s Fare in Pasadena and the UC Cooperative Extension’s Master Gardeners ran a demo for the kids.
