This Week on Good Food: Eggs Galore, Easter Candy and the Sriracha Plot Thickens

From eggs to candy, we cover all things Easter. Plus, we head to Little Saigon for nem nuong and hear an update on the status of the Sriracha Factory in Irwindale.

1. Easter Candy Roundup–Good Food asks KCRW staffers to recount some of their favorite Easter basket memories. Then we turn to Eric J. Lawrence, KCRW’s Music Librarian and resident candy fanatic who tells us about some of his favorite easter candies.

 2. Are You Cooking Eggs Wrong?–Michael Ruhlman is the author of Egg: A Culinary Exploration of the World’s Most Versatile Ingredient. Find a recipe for his Crispy Mollett Egg with Asparagus on the Good Food Blog.

3. Which Eggs Should I Buy at the Store?–When you’re peering down at an egg carton, do you ever feel confused by terms like “organic” and “free range” and “omega 3s”? Terry Golson, author of The Farmstead Egg Guide and Cookbook, gives us a lesson in decoding the language on the egg carton.

4. Has the Srirachapocalypse Arrived?–Ernesto Hernandez Lopez is a law professor at Chapman University. He’s been closely following the legal battles surrounding the Sriracha factory in Irwindale and wrote an op-ed about it in the Chicago Tribune. Hoy Fung Foods, the maker of the spicy condiment, moved their sriracha factory from Rosemead to Irwindale in 2012 and over the past year residents of Irwindale have been complaining of noxious smells coming from the factory. The LA Times reports that David Tran, creator of sriracha, is now entertaining offers to move his factory as far away as Texas. We’ll be following the story and keep you up to date on our facebook page.

5. Jonathan Gold Reviews Brodard Chateau–Jonathan Gold is the Pulitzer-prize winning food writer for the Los Angeles Times. This week he reviews Brodard Chateau, a restaurant in Garden Grove specializing in central Vietnamese cuisine. Jonathan says the draw is their nem nuong, a popular Vietnamese street food.

Jonathan recommends the nem nuong, “moon cakes” or banh khot, the fresh clam and rice and the bun hanoi.

6. Market Report–Laura Avery talks to Sonoko Sakai about the Santa Monica Farmers’ Market’s first rice farmer, Robin Koda of Koda Farms, who will begin selling her rice at the market on April 23rd.

Marguerita Smith is a chef and daughter of Robin Smith, who owns Mud Creek Ranch. She talks about the riffs on limoncello she’s making with every type of citrus imaginable.
