Alabama rockers St. Paul and The Broken Bones are Live From KCRW’s Annenberg Performance Studio to send us off into the weekend with a serious injection of soul. Click in for rapturous renditions of songs from the band’s highly regarded 2023 album Angels In Science Fiction. This includes “Lonely Love Song,” “Sea Star,” and as something of a KCRW exclusive (given that the band almost never plays it live), “Oporto-Madrid Blvd.”
Frontman Paul Janeway proves to be a consummate conversationalist as he goes deep with Anthony Valadez on the philosophical and literary implications behind the title Angels In Science Fiction. Fun fact: It was Janeway’s lit-major wife who insisted on the evocative “In” of the album’s name, as opposed to the first draft: Angels And Science Fiction. Plus, Valadez and Janeway bond over their mutual passion for pro-wrestling, and geek out about St. Paul and The Broken Bones sharing the stage with Bell Biv Devoe as part of this weekend’s 2023 Jazz Festival at the Hollywood Bowl.
There’s so much more in the mix elsewhere throughout the show. The layers of King Krule’s latest opus Space Heavy keep revealing themselves, and we want to continue peeling them back together. Kassa Overall’s ANIMALS is another slow burn rewarding many repeat spins. And even though the morning sun hasn’t revealed itself in Los Angeles for awhile now, it’s always wonderful to Eddie Chacon sing about it.
