Aug 9, 2023

This one goes out to all the ‘90s kids who ignored the “New Releases” section at their local Blockbuster Video, and made a beeline for “Special Interest.” It’s for everyone who obsessively taped each one of Hulk Hogan’s greatest WWF entrances, and did the same for countless Chicago Bulls and LA Dodger games. In short, it’s for sports fanatics of all stripes, but especially those whose formative years took place from the late 1980s to the mid 1990s.

KCRW’s Nassir Nassirzadeh presents, Rewind to Glory: An exploration of late ‘80s and early ‘90s sports culture as soundtracked via VHS. Wanna hear the Alan Parsons Project cut that greeted the classic lineup Bulls each time they took the court? How about Wreckx-n-Effect shouting out NBA all-stars in 1992 (including some nice nods to the Golden State Warriors)? This and so much more is here, including the best of the best library music sourced to fit every sports doc that one had to dig to find. And for those really looking to feel some type of way, listen through to the very end for Peter Cetera’s “Glory of Love” (from The Karate KidPart II OST), the main title theme from 1993’s underdog masterpiece Rudy, and Nassirzadeh reflecting on the added layer of experiencing these cultural touchstones as a proud first generation Iranian-American.
