Surf culture has an aggressive side, especially at premiere destinations like Topanga Beach. Some folks are working to change that. 

The novel “California Golden,” set on the sandy beaches of 1960s Malibu, shows what happens when a trailblazing surfer neglects her two daughters. 

Black walnut trees are essential in LA’s ecosystems and indigenous cultures. Some residents are pushing to preserve and repopulate them.
