The push for progressive district attorneys across the US

The effort to unseat Jackie Lacey is part of a broader national movement to reshape the criminal justice system by electing more progressive prosecutors.

Tiffany Cabán, a candidate in Queens, New York, has been running on a platform to end cash bail and decriminalize drugs and sex work. She appears to have won her primary election this week.

Progressive district attorneys have also taken over offices in Chicago, Philadelphia, Boston, and Houston. If Lacey were to lose to someone in that vein in 2020, it would be a huge win for the movement, since LA is the largest district attorney’s office in the nation.
