The State Controller is elected statewide as California’s chief financial officer—ensuring that the budget is spent the way it’s supposed to be and that the state’s bills are paid on time. The Controller also can audit other state agencies and sits on no less than 81 boards and commissions, including the Franchise Tax Board, the Coastal Commission, the Lands Commission and the Board of Equalization.

Ashley Swearengin is the two-term Mayor of Fresno. She is the Republican candidate for State Controller. Betty Yee is a member of the California Board of Equalization, and is the Democratic candidate for State Controller.
