Everybody knows that local newspapers are struggling to make money in the digital age and cutting reporting staffs to the bone. What does that mean? Bob Schieffer of CBS News recently predicted, “corruption at a level we've never experienced,” because papers can't afford to cover City Hall.

Everybody knows that local newspapers are struggling to make money in the digital age and cutting reporting staffs to the bone. What does that mean? Bob Schieffer of CBS News recently predicted, “corruption at a level we've never experienced,” because papers can't afford to cover City Hall. Austin Beutner has been publisher of the Los Angeles Times for less than a year. Now he's publisher and CEO of the California News Group, which includes the newly acquired Union-Tribune of San Diego.
