When Marguerite Poindexter LaMotte died unexpectedly, the LA Unified School Board was left pretty much divided between three members backed by self-styled reformers and three supported by employee unions, including the United Teachers of LA. Their candidate, 50-year veteran George McKenna was first in the June primary. Alex Johnson, an aide to County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas, came in second. We’ll hear from both candidates. The runoff is Tuesday of next week.
