    In California, it’s illegal to salvage recently dead wildlife from the side of state roads and highways. But a bill advancing through the state legislature might change that. Environmental activists like the ideal; they don’t want good meat going to waste. Others are concerned that this could enable poaching, jeopardize traffic safety, and lead to foodborne illnesses.

    In 20 other states, including West Virginia, it’s legal to harvest roadkill for food.
