RR’s Top 10 MBE Performances of 2015

It was only six months ago I became the producer for Morning Becomes Eclectic, a position held by only two people before me.

Of course I was overjoyed, since the show has meant so much to me since I first became a KCRW listener 15 years ago. It was amazing to be a part of something that means so much to so many people, but it was also a touch terrifying for the same reason!

That said, I’m super proud of the work I’ve been able to do with our MD and MBE host Jason Bentley and I’m excited for what we have in store for 2016.

Here’s a look back at some of my favorite sessions of the year (including some produced by Ariana Morgenstern, now an executive producer in our music department).

The Arcs Dan Auerbach slays it with a band of seasoned pros. In the studio I learned that Dan and I both share the same fave song from their record — “Put a Flower in Your Pocket”.

Alabama Shakes Nothing can stop Brittany Howard. She’s as funny as she is talented.

Leon Bridges This soulful singer has a genuine sweetness that sets him apart. He was a joy to work with.

Tobias Jesso Jr I’m not going to lie. I cried during this session. Beautiful breakup ballads.

My Morning Jacket Simply one of the best rock bands around. They NEVER disappoint.

Odesza One of my fave albums of 2014 and their live shows are as fun as you would hope they would be.

Ride The return of Ride!!! So impressive.

Kamasi Washington This LA artist shows a level of true musicianship and experimentation I’ve been missing. Also, most of the musicians in the room are guys he grew up with here. I loved that.

Natalia Lafourcade The Latin indie pop star really won us over with this one.

Mac Demarco Mac was fighting off a cold and clearly felt miserable yet he still delivered one of my favorite performances of the year. I just love his breezy pop. It makes me smile.Runners up: Sylvan Esso, Beirut, St Lucia, BORNS, and Brandi Carlile
