Hollywood News Banter

Hosted by

Matt Belloni, executive editor of the Hollywood Reporter joins Kim Masters to discuss top entertainment news stories of the week.

  • Matt Belloni talks about his cover story for the Hollywood Reporter, a much-coveted interview with WME-IMG’s Ari Emanuel and Patrick Whitesell. Everyone is waiting to see if their $2.4 billion wager in acquiring IMG will pay off. The talent agency is no longer just an agency, but an entertainment conglomerate, and it looks like they might be preparing for an IPO.
  • Cannes will open with the Woody Allen film Cafe Society this year. That's not news in itself, but this is the film that Amazon Studios paid $15 million for -- a very high price for an indie. It’s strange to think about an Amazon movie opening the famous festival. Everyone is waiting to see whether Amazon and Netflix will be able to successfully distribute movies theatrically.
  • Empire came roaring back in the ratings here in the US, but it’s not had the same success overseas. Foreign TV executives are still trying to figure out how to get television with diverse casts to succeed in Europe.
