A couple’s 4000-mile journey across the Arctic by foot and canoe

Ornithologist Caroline Van Hemert and her husband, Pat, had no real training when they set off to travel 4000 miles by rowboat, foot, skis, and rafts across some of the most remote and forbidding landscape on Earth.

It’s a journey that few elite adventurers have managed to pull off.

Caroline Van Hemert wrote about their journey in her book, “The Sun Is a Compass: A 4000-Mile Journey Into The Alaskan Wilds.”
