Malia Obama is putting a spotlight on the "gap year," routine in Europe but still a luxury in this country.

Malia Obama's parents both went to Harvard, so it's no surprise that she will be going there, too… with one exception. She'll be taking a year off after graduating from the Sidwell Friends School in Washington, DC. It turns out that more and more US colleges are encouraging what's called the "gap year." So, what's it good for, and who can afford it? Jeffrey Selingo is author of There Is Life after College. He says more high school seniors need to take a gap year.
