The story goes that halfway through the first script reading for an episode of Life with Lucy, Lucille Ball's final, doomed ABC sit-com in the late 1980's, she stopped mid-sentence, waved her hand dismissively at the chunk of dialogue on the page, turned to the writers and rasped, in her unforgettable whiskey voice, "Talk, talk, talk! Put me on a ladder!..."
